Attached please find the category items that Mr. King brought up as possible areas to cut the budget.  This in no way means they would be cut, but that these are areas that could be targeted.  Anything marked (frozen) means that it is in the budget but will not be spent for this current year.  Council could choose to extend the freeze into next fiscal year which begins in October.

I was debating adding specific slide areas from the supplemental material (every slide at the workshop) but decided that since readers would have different areas of interest that it would be best to simply link to the city website here.

Finally, I had a couple of comments from citizens regarding the Liveblog from Thursday which I will summarize here and hopefully clarify my thoughts.

First- since this is a live blog, I'm posting as the events are happening.  Blogging can capture a summary but isn't the same as video and sometimes clarity and speed conflict.  Stephen Southwell videotaped while I was blogging and you can catch things as they happened at his website.  He will be posting the videos over the next couple of days.

With that- during the section where Chief Kerbow and Mr. King were reviewing police staffing there were two comments that I could probably clarify. One, while technology helps us generate more revenues and do more with less, it also creates more activity for officers which could be spent responding to crimes in process.  As always, technology is a good specialist but it doesn't always fill the gap of not having enough officers.

I also used a sentence that was thrown out stating "patrol is what you do after a crime happens".  I've been informed that the term "patrol" has a different meaning and might cause some confusion.  In the context of the meeting Mr. King was discussing methods of policing and public perceptions of crime and response.  In that conversation 'patrol' was meant as an activity that the police would do after a serious crime or rash of crime in an area to increase their presence.  It did not mean 'patrol officers'.  I apologize if that created any confusion as I did not interpret the conversation to mean patrol officers are unimportant and just show up after the fact as might be implied if you use the word patrol as a noun versus a verb.

In other news, people actually read the liveblog!  Please keep the feedback coming as the information at the workshop is a great way to get a pulse of where the city is and what our leaders believe will be our next steps.
